Manila Tour: A close Look at Intramuros, Manila

Intramuros, located along the southern bank of the Pasig River, was built by the Spaniards in the 16th century and is the oldest district of the city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Its name, in Latin, intramuros, literally "within the walls", meaning within the wall enclosure of the city/fortress, also describes its structure as it is surrounded by thick, high walls and moats. During the Spanish colonial period, Intramuros was considered Manila itself.

Present day Intramuros

In the 1980s, under the direction of former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos, the Intramuros Administration restored the city and at present the walled city is the only district of Manila where old Spanish-era influences were retained. Much of the development of present-day Manila occurred outside the gates of Intramuros, leaving the surviving walls, streets and churches of Intramuros minimally touched by modernization, although outlets of Jollibee, McDonald's and Starbucks now sit alongside distinguished educational institutions within its walls. The old moats that surrounded Intramuros have been filled up and transformed into a golf course where locals and foreign nationals play the sport. The garrison that was Fort Santiago is now a tourist spot where visitors can enjoy the nostalgic romance of a bygone Spanish legacy within its gardens. In 2003, during Visit Philippines Year, Tourism Secretary Richard J. Gordon cleaned up Intramuros with the help of student and civilian volunteers as well as raised funds to light up the place and build a lights and sound museum.

Intramuros now houses some of the higher education institutions in the Philippines. These are the city-owned Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, the technical school Mapúa Institute of Technology, Lyceum of the Philippines University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran and high schools such as the Manila High School, and Colegio de Santa Rosa.

Following the design of medieval fortifications, along the massive walls of Intramuros are strategically located bulwarks: baluarte, ravelins: ravellin, redoubts: reducto. Entrance to the city are through gates: puerta, most of which have been restored or rebuilt. Most of these features have names such as Baluarte de San Diego, Baluarte de San Francisco de Dilao, Baluarte de San Gabriel, Baluarte de Sta. Barbara, Baluarte de San Andres; Puerta Real, Puerta Isabel II, Puerta del Parian, Puerta Almacenes, Postigo del Palacio, Puerta Sta. Lucia.

Visita Iglesia Routes for Holy Thursday

Visita Iglesia has become a Catholic tradition that has been deeply embedded in our Christian Faith. I just heard this afternoon over Radio Veritas that not even in Rome (considered as the seat of Catholicism) is this tradition so alive than here in the Philippines. In fact, while we declare Holy Thursday and Good Friday as special holidays to give way to this tradition, Rome does not practice this but rather considers those days as ordinary days where people go to work just like in other ordinary days.

So what exactly is Visita Iglesia? This is a custom of visiting seven churches on Holy Thursday that is said to have originated from the early Christian practice of visiting the seven great basilicas in Rome.

During this Holy Week, we should try to visit heritage churches so that we get a glimpse of Philippine culture while we pray. These centuries-old churches form an inherent part of our national identity, and we must thus endeavor to preserve them for future generations of Filipinos.

In the City of Manila, check out the Manila Cathedral, San Agustin, Binondo, Sta. Cruz, Quiapo, San Sebastian, Malate and Sta. Ana. You can go further by visiting San Pedro Makati, Guadalupe and Pasig. Check out this list of heritage churches in Metro Manila for the rest.

Pampanga is an emerging visita iglesia destination. Take the San Simon exit and backtrack to the Apalit Church which is the silver dome you see from the NLEX. Then cross over to the other side and drive to the town of San Luis. Then pass by the San Fernando Cathedral, the half-buried Bacolor Church, Betis Church and its ornate white and gold retablo and marvelous wall to ceiling murals, and Lubao which is Pampanga's oldest town church. If you have time, include Angeles City, Sta. Rita or Minalin.

In Bulacan, pass by Barasoain, the Malolos Cathedral, San Rafael and Angat (although there's an explosion of gold leaf inside and new ceiling murals which do not match the original simplicity of the church).

The Laguna de Bay Loop is a very popular route. Make sure you pass by the churches in Pila, Longos (Kalayaan), Paete, Pakil and Mabitac in Laguna; and Tanay, Baras, Morong and Antipolo in Rizal.

Then there's the Mount Banahaw Loop which brings you to the provinces of Laguna, Quezon and Batangas. You can start with San Pablo, followed by Nagcarlan and Majayjay in Laguna; then to Lucban, Tayabas and Sariaya in Quezon; and finally San Juan in Batangas.

In Batangas, also check out the Cathedral and Carmelite Convent in Lipa, San Jose Church, the Immaculate Conception Basilica in Batangas City, Taal Basilica and Caysasay Shrine in Taal, and Balayan Church. You can go further to Cavite and visit the churches in Maragondon and Silang.

To those who have been asking how many basilicas we have in the Philippines, the answer is twelve: Agoo, La Union; Piat, Cagayan; Malolos, Bulacan; Manila Cathedral, Quiapo, San Sebastian and Binondo in Manila; Batangas City and Taal in Batangas; Tayabas, Quezon; Penafranacia, Naga City; and Sto. Nino in Cebu. You can also visit churches in the list of national cultural treasures.

Makati Skyline at Night

Makati is considered as a Central Business District as this is where where many global companies, the influential Makati Business Club and the Philippine Stock Exchange hold office. Makati also boasts of its own version of Wall Street–the Ayala Avenue.

But looking at this city at night would tell us a different side of this bustling city. Having the country's tallest skyscrapers to house key offices and financial institutions, Makati City at night is really just fabulous!

I just read somewhere that in Sydney, Australia, the skyline is well lit at night too but when you pass by them via flyovers and bridges, you see that they are empty. Accordingly, its government requires these buildings to keep their lights on for tourist purposes, to have a picturesque night skyline. But I guess in the case of Makati, the lights are on because there are people working in them- call centers as BPO or Business Process Outsourcing is thriving here in the Philippines. Indeed, Makati Skyline is for real!

I have also included herein a review of the Manila Traders Hotel which I got from the following source: http://www.philippines-travel-guide.com/traders-hotel-manila.html. Check this out!

Manila Traders Hotel was a really good choice. The guests looked to be more business orientated than tourists so the service was very good. Sometimes I can be forgiving of hotels so long as the service is good. In this case not only was the service good but the Traders Hotel was more than I expected.

As is the case just about everywhere in Manila, there are guards on the door, you also have to pass through a metal detector and have your bag searched prior to entering the Traders Hotel, which is no big deal, they also had a sniffer dog on alert as well. Mind you the dog, which was a golden retriever, looked like he had been pulled out of retirement.

The best part about the Traders Hotel Manila is it's location.

It is right on Roxas Boulevard, just opposite the Cultural Center of the Philippines. All the front rooms have floor to ceiling windows with a view out over Manila Bay.

If you have yet to witness a Manila Bay Sunset then do yourself a favor and catch a glimpse, for a preview have a look here at some photos of Manila's sunset. breath taking don't you think!

If you want to enjoy the sunset even more go for a walk along Manila's Baywalk on dusk.

Manila Traders Hotel like all 4 star Manila hotels has all the mod cons.

Let's face it where would we be without cable TV, Air-Conditioned rooms, International Phones, Bar Fridge and the list can go on and on, but these days that is not spectacular, it is what we come to expect.

What I did like was the in room Broadband Internet Access, for me this made my life easier, as I need to be connected to the cyber world, others may not need it.

The price I paid included breakfast. I always ensure the price I pay includes breakfast, I must admit breakfast at the Traders Hotel Manila, was probably only adequate if I compare it to the Heritage Hotel, which has an amazing range of food.

I cannot advise on there other meals, because I always eat away from the hotels in Manila, except for breakfast.

Now when it comes to hotels, no matter where they are in the world, I always look for a price that will not hit me too hard in the pocket. Not that east to do these days, mainly because there are so many choices and the choices are not just, which hotel but rather where do I get the best price from.

Marine Enthusiasts or Not, Is the Manila Oceanpark Worth a Peek?

Have you ever set foot to the pride of Manila that is the Manila Oceanpark? From the Manila airport, the venue is just a minutes away and is almost adjacent to the breathtaking view of Manila Bay. Manila Oceanpark – the Philippines’ first state-of-the-art Oceanarium, open water marine habitat, boutique mall, restaurant row and function facilities all located in one complex at the back of the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park.

As I wouldn’t be able to give justice to the place if I were to describe it in my own words, I decided to just duplicate the description as follows:

Agos(Flow)

Begin your journey with a trek through a jungle! Marvel as you see water cascading from a simulated waterfall that also flows into 8 different water tanks, each containing an intriguing collection of freshwater fauna. This flow replicates the water cycle that begins on land and eventually leads to the open ocean, highlighting the interconnectedness between earth and sea. The rocky shoreline is represented by the Dalampasigan pool where one can physically interact with some of the animals on display.

Bahura(Coral Reef)

The Philippines is known as the “center of the center of marine biodiversity”. Bahura contains 46 tanks that draw attention to the fascinating assortment of coral reef inhabitants. Be mesmerized by the multiple hues and diverse life forms that can be found in our country’s reefs.

Laot(Fishing Ground)

Four large tanks display a collection of marine fish from the open sea that are often utilized as food. These impressive aquariums, as well as their outsized inhabitants, are definitely a sight to behold.

Buhay na Karagatan(The Living Ocean)

Experience the life aquatic! Enjoy a breathtaking 25-meter walk along an underwater tunnel and experience how marine animals interact with each other in their natural habitat. This attraction, the centerpiece of the Oceanarium, provides an unmatched and truly remarkable encounter with the explosive richness of the underwater world.

Ang Kalaliman(The Deep)

Ang Kalaliman’s resident fish are the jacks - well-known among anglers for the spectacular fights they put up when hooked on fishing line. Fishing is not allowed in Manila Ocean Park; however, it is perfectly okay to gaze at these sleek animals for long periods of time.

Pagi (Stingrays)

Watch as stingrays from many different species glide from above as you stand beneath this unique overhanging tank. Distant relatives of sharks, stingrays often evoke a mix of emotions such as fear, awe, and fascination.

Pating(Sharks)

The Philippines is home to several shark species. Though they are often depicted as savage man-eaters, most sharks would prefer to avoid rather than approach people. At the Pating tank, neither sharks nor people have to be afraid of one another; in fact, we invite everyone to come see these magnificent creatures, and observe how these large carnivorous fish aren’t really scary after all.

Public Review:

I did a little research on the comments/reviews of some people who have been to the place, a summary of which is as follows:

1.There is no public transport to Ocean Park so either take a taxi or walk.
2.Entrance is expensive by local standards but comparable with similar facilities in other countries.
3.An interesting concept is used where your visit starts in freshwater and progresses through coral reef and fishing ground to deep sea in 7 stages.
4.It is interesting to see many of the fish, that are eaten regularly, in their natural habitat but I was surprised that there was no Bangus (Milkfish) the national fish or Tilapia.
5.The 25mtr long Living Ocean was fascinating as all manner of fish swim interacting with each other.
6.The shark tank was also interesting to see.
7.The final stage is "Doctor Fish" who will nibble dead skin from your The final stage is "Doctor Fish" who will nibble dead skin from your feet for 20 minutes and is very popular.
8.It is very difficult to photograph some of the fish because it is dark and they move fairly quickly.
One irritation is that there are many notices as well as announcements not to use fish as it disturbs them but many visitors use flash anyway.
9.The only down side was we were one of the last to enter that day and the souvenir shop was rushing to close.
10.Not that much to see compared to other aquariums in Asia, the good part is the fish spa in which the kids will surely enjoy, other than that it’s just a mere aquarium. Away from major roads, hard to get public transportation
11.The entrance fee of P400 is not too expensive compared to those found in Europe. The rate for the kids, which is just lower by P50 than that of the adult, may have to be reviewed. Entrance to the attraction is not that well organized.
12.Considering that the Philippines is surrounded by water, I was surprised that the aquarium was quite small. You could easily see everything in an hour or less. The main reason why I went there was the doctor fish. P120 allows you 20 minutes for the doctor fish to nibble on your feet.

Manila Travel Guide

In the days of the Spanish Empire, Manila was Spain's seat of power in Asia and the Pacific. Today, the city and its people are a mish-mash of the East and West. A string of harsh invasions (Spain, USA, Japan) and a history of hardships moulded Filipinos into resilient, good-humoured and resourceful people, traits that can be seen in their everyday life.

The friendliness of Filipinos translates to good customer service in hotels, businesses and malls. Most residents speak English, so navigating the city is not a big problem. These, plus the added purchasing value of the foreign exchange rate, make Manila a great place for guests looking for luxury, pampering and bargains.

‘Manila' really refers to two places: the City of Manila, founded by Spanish conquerors in 1571 by the side of Manila Bay, and the larger Metropolitan Manila (abbreviated to Metro Manila), which encompasses the City of Manila and 17 other cities. Filipinos use ‘Manila' to mean Metro Manila, while the term Manileño is reserved exclusively for the City of Manila's residents.

Manila's history is intertwined with its geographic location. Manila Bay was an ideal port for Spanish ships bearing gold, spices, silk and ceramics (treasure hunters still seek sunken Manila galleons today). Unfortunately for Manileños, this also attracted a string of invaders.

Spain first conquered Manila in 1571. For 300 years, Spain successfully repelled a series of invasion attempts by the Chinese, Dutch and the British. A Filipino revolutionary force triumphed over the Spanish in 1896. But this was shortlived as the USA took over Manila in 1898. The city finally got its independence after WWII.

The city is mostly warm and humid, with an average temperature of 27°C (81°F). It gets cooler in the months of December to February (down to around 21°C/70°F), and warmer to hot during March to May (up to around 34°C/93°F). The rainy season used to be in June to September, but this has shifted towards September to October, with typhoons often arriving during these months.

Top Manila Hotels to Be In

As one of the popular tourist destinations in South East Asia, it is no surprise that the Philippines is laden with top-class hotels. One area that is abundant with these establishments is Manila. Being the country's capital, it is pretty much where the action takes place. So if you are planning a visit to Manila any time soon, here are some hotels that you might want to consider checking in to.

Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila
Located in the famous Malate district, the Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila measures at 32 stories and comes with a total of 378 guestrooms and suites. Each one is fully furnished to meet your daily needs, making each stay as comfortable as your own home. The best part about it though is that you get to enjoy a scenic view of the bay area every time you open your windows. Finally, thanks to its location, the hotel is easily accessible to the airport and other tourist spots around the metropolis.

Pan Pacific Hotel Manila
The Pan Pacific Hotel Manila gives you something that no other hotel in the metro can offer: high-quality Butler service. So if you want to feel what it is like to have someone address your every need, then this hotel is for you. Aside from giving you this unique service, the hotel has 236 rooms and suites that you can choose from, ranging from executive to contemporary styles. And since it is located in the middle of the metropolis, you have easy access to the finest shopping malls and eateries around the area.

Crowne Plaza Hotel
Holding the distinction of being the first Crowne Plaza Hotel to open in Manila, the hotel lives up to its reputation by offering the finest services available. This includes a 24-hour room service and in-room mini-bar to help cater to your every need. But what the Crowne Plaza Hotel is best known for is its buffet restaurant Seven Corners and its Chinese specialty eatery, the popular Xin Tian Di. Plus, since the hotel is linked directly to the Robinsons Galleria shopping mall, you will be able to enjoy shopping for souvenirs without having to worry about how you will take them back to the hotel.

G Hotel Manila By Waterfront
Although it may not be as large as the other hotels in the list, the G Hotel Manila By Waterfront makes up for its lack of size by providing superior service to its guests. With a total of only fifty rooms, including the suites, the hotel is able to give its guests a more personalized type of service, making them feel more cared for. Also, since the hotel is located near the bay area, you get to enjoy a good view of the Manila Bay.

Intercontinental Hotel
Not all hotels can claim that they were designed by National Artist Leandro Locsin. And that's the distinction that sets the Intercontinental Hotel apart from its competitors. Set up in the heart of the business district, Makati, the hotel gives you access to both Glorietta and Greenbelt. By being accessible to these two establishments, you get to enjoy shopping until the closing hours of the malls or you can experience the party life offered by the different bars and restaurants around the area. And who could ever forget Edsa Manila? This is the bastion of Filipino democarcy from the hands of the Marcos regime. This is where political miracle, if there is ever such a word, happened in 1986. It was an event that the entire world stand to appreciate in awe! A political struggle that ended peacefully and without bloodshed that toppled more than 20 years of dictatorship. Up to now this place is still being regarded as the seat of peaceful democratic protest against tyranny and political suppression. Come to think of it, it just a long and trafficked highway especially to daily Filipino commuters passing by this route in going to and from their jobs. But to what it has symbolized to the Filipinos and to the rest of the world.....Edsa Manila will forever be remembered for what it stands for...DEMOCRACY.

The Stories of Manila Hotel

If Raffles Hotel is said to be the embodiment of Singapore's rich culture, the Manila Hotel serves as the favorite muse of all hotels in the Philippines. It is described as a "living testimonial of Philippine heritage."

Built by the Americans near the turn of the 20th century, the Manila Hotel has stood witness to important events in Philippine history including the Philippine Commonwealth, the Second World War, the Restoration of the Philippine Republic, Martial Law, People Power, Restoration of Democracy, attempts of Coup d' etat, Impeachment of an incumbent president and so much more. Despite the wear and tear of time, Manila Hotel is still surviving and fighting for its existence in Philippine landscape and history.

The doors of the Manila Hotel were first opened in 1912. It used to host the festivities during the inauguration of the Philippine Commonwealth government. But when the Japanese occupied the Philippines in the 1940s, the hotel became the headquarters of the Imperial Army. When the time of the Liberation came, Manila was bombed by the Americans in order to attack the Japanese forces seeking refuge in the capital. It was a miracle that this hotel survived this bombing and was later rebuilt in its finest stature.

Up to the present time, it holds important political events and inaugurations of notable people in the Philippines. Foreign leaders and Heads of State like Prince Charles stayed in this hotel, as well as entertainers Sammy Davis Jr. and The Beatles. It had also been a home to authors Ernest Hemingway and James Michener, Time publisher Henry Luce, and actors John Wayne and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

Among the notable personalities that stayed in this hotel, there is one that truly made a mark: Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who played an important role in liberating the Philippines from the Japanese invasion. General MacArthur stayed in the hotel for a time before the War broke in the 1940s. The same room that Gen. MacArthur stayed in was preserved until now in its original condition. This room was even named after the brave general who became dear to the Filipinos' hearts.

The hotel's major renovation and reconstruction was done during the time of the Marcos dictatorship. It was reopened in 1977 with an even grander and more glamorous appeal. This time can be considered the hotel's peak of glory. It was during this era when the Manila Hotel won many international awards and gain recognitions from all around the globe.

If Manila Hotel could only tell stories of what it had been through for the past century, publishers will surely not ran out of books to publish. But even without speaking, the architecture, the style and the design of the Manila Hotel could already testify to what it had experienced. And as a symbol of Philippine culture at its finest, Manila Hotel will never cease to tell its stories to the coming generations.
